Lightings : Arco Lamp by Achille Castiglioni [Installed]

This by far is the loudest lighting i had installed. Mentioned on previous post, this lamp is from a famous designer in 1962. We got this at a fraction of the original price, which was retailing at Space for $4,000 before discount. However, getting in cheap, we had to do our own transport & installation. The installation is actually quite straight forward with 1 screw and the rest is just a couple of hooking & snapping. Also, the marble is very heavy, so carrying and shifting around is difficult.

  

We try to arrange it beside the sofa but the L Shape sofa corner was too far from coffee table so we have to bring it to the balcony side so that the lamp lands right in the middle of the coffee table.

Lightings : Tord Boontje Garland [Installed]

Happy new year people!
This will be the first post of the year!

This lamp, probably the first lighting feature post about cool designs, had arrive via air from a ebay seller in US a while back. Featured in the previous post, you can find more details of Tord Boontje & the Garland for Artecnica

Its also the first thing we D-I-Yed in our place, apart from the lighting cord done by the Electrician, this GARLAND all done by myself.

Its actually a continuous strand of brass cut outs leaves & flowers just like a long vine.

Above is the lamp lighted up 

So what I did was to wrap it around this bulb over and over again trying my best to shade the direct light emitted from the bulb.

The bulb chosen is a 20 watts IKEA bulb which is rather not very bright. Also, this bulb have a rubbery coat on the glass which turns out to be really good as its not so slippery.

Lastly, we "sculpt" this by twisting out the leaves & flowers to form the structure, a bit like hair styling, pushing in to create volume & pinching out to create definitions.

Really fun, interactive & definitely 100% ownership!!

Lightings: Louis Poulsen anti-glare luminaire [Installed]

Its been too long since our last post.

We had finally complete our renov & finally set up our broadband.

This post will talk about the 2 previously featured lighting we had ordered and been installed.

In our dining area, Louis Poulsen Artichoke is a glare-free luminaire by Poul Henningsen.

Also in the photo, A Vintage 1963 Hille Chair upholstered in Chocolate Brown Canvas.

Sadly, Hille had discontinue this collection & shift their market focus to making auditorium seating & our standard school chairs. 

In master bedroom, a ultra-retro Louis Poulsen Snowball is a glare-free luminaire by Poul Henningsen. Many could have mistaken this as a Verner Panton as its frequently paired with Panton seating & wall decor. Truth is, Verner Panton did design something similar

The coincidental thing is my mum actually got us a cheap bed sheet set that had a picture of the lamp in it. She some how has the ability to foresee how my bedroom will look like.

Lightings: Louis Poulsen anti-glare luminaire

The sexy term Anti-glare Luminaire, refers to lighting that has bulb well-covered so that it will not glare our eyes when looking @ it. 

Louis Poulsen is a 70+ year old Danish company that had made a couple of famous lamps. We see this all over the magazines & films. 

The collaboration of this company and Poul Henningsen started way back in 1924.

In this post, we'll talk a bit more on Poul Henningsen & 2 of this iconic lamps.

 

Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen was born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect, but studied at The Technical School at Frederiksberg, Denmark from 1911-14, and then at Technical College in Copenhagen from 1914-17.

He started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, but over the years his professional interests changed to focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. He also expanded his field of occupation into areas of writing, becoming a journalist and an author. For a short period at the beginning of WWII, he was the head architect of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. But like many other creative people, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden.

His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen was also the first editor of the company magazine “NYT”. The CEO of Louis Poulsen at the time, Sophus Kaastrup-Olsen, gave the magazine to PH as a gift because he had been terminated from the Danish newspaper he worked for (his opinions were too radical).

Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction—compared to man’s need for light remains the fondation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting.

The Artichoke

It blew us away when we saw this multiple Artichoke classic masterpieces on the ceiling of Crown Casino Melbourne. Sorry for the poor lighting taken as we took this from then external of the lobby. In the picture, there are countless pieces. Made up of 3 sizes, the mirrors on the walls further doubles the quantity & makes it impossible to count. This suspended installation stole the limelight of this lobby and people are staring up the ceiling in awe. This had totally convince ourselves that we are definitely getting this lamp either for our dining or our living. This multiplying effect also inspire us to place mirrors behind this lamps to further dramatize the structure of the lamp.

Concept
PH Artichoke is a glare-free luminair

e consisting of 72 leaves, which shield the light source, redirect and reflect the light onto the underlying leaves, resulting in distinct, unique lighting.

Copper or stainless steel, brushed and coated. White, wet painted.

Story behind the product
The PH Artichoke is considered to be a classical masterpiece made by Poul Henningsen more than 40 years ago. The structure is made of twelve steel arches. On this structure PH placed 72 copper “leaves” in twelve circular rows with six blades in each row. Because each row is staggered from the previous, all 72 leaves are able to “cover for each other”. This design allows viewing the fixture from any angle without being able to see the light source located in the center of the PH Artichoke. The original PH Artichokes were developed for a restaurant in Copenhagen called the Langelinie Pavilion, and they are still hanging there today. 

The Snowball

This super retro era lamp is a total must have for all of you hippies. The round structure really reminds me of Verner Panton and Austin Powers movie, totally groovy. I fell in love with this while browsing their catalog. Like Artichoke, the shade of each layers were strategically space to shade the bulb so that its anti-glare. while each plate will then bounce light off each other generally pointing the light downwards.

Concept
PH Snowball is a glare-free luminaire. The geometry of the PH Snowball ensures that all the illuminated surfaces of the shades are hit by light rays at the same angle, creating optimum, even lighting performance.

Story behind the product
The PH Snowball is considered a smaller version of the PH Louvre made for the Adventist Church in Skodsborg, Denmark. But unlike the PH Louvre, the number of shades is reduced to just eight mounted on three legs - and the diameter of the fixture is also reduced due to the fact that it was intended for lower ceiling spaces. This fixture was first launched together with the PH 5 and the PH Artichoke but it did not get the same attention as the other two pendants. However, as a result of the PH Snowball being re-drawn and re-introduced in 1983 this fixture has come alive again. Today it is made with white shades glossed on the top and matted on the underside. The top of the shades are glossy in order to create sparkling light. The undersides of the shades are matte to avoid reflections of the light source.

Lightings : Arco Lamp by Achille Castiglioni

This lamp is featured in plenty of magazines and tv shows. By far this has to be the most iconic lamps from the 60s. No doubt its designed many decades back, but it still remain timeless & super classy. I recently got a lobang to get this at a fraction of the cost. However, its replica.

Do be careful if you plan to get a replica, cos there are plenty of manufacturers out there using poorer quality materials. such as replacing stainless steel & aluminum to regular steel that may rust. Marble could be man-made as well. There are plenty of this ranging along $250 - $700 along Jalan besar, Balestier & geylang, quite a couple of them had rust on them. Quality is important. Also there are plenty of fake, cheaper variations. Flat round marble base, round arm are just to name a few. The very original is like the pictures, rectangle marble with rectangular section arms.

Arco lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos : functional elegance sums up this fantastic floor lamp designed by Achille Castiglioni for Flos in 1962.  The Arco lamp is a superbly executed work of art which duals as a stylish modern floor lamp; it features our favorite material by far; Italian Carrara marble. Carrara is a town in the Italian Alps where the quarries are located which produce this fantastic marble. 

The Arco lamp has remained unchanged and the current production is exactly the same as the ones produced in 1962 with exception of the electrical system which was upgraded.  The Arco lamps timeless elegance makes it look as modern now as when it was first produced in 1962. Possibly, hundreds of thousands of Arco floor lamps have been sold all over the world since 1962. 

This modern design cult object was a collaboration between Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and the lighting company Flos from Italy.  Achille Castiglioni himself once said that he found inspiration for the Arco lamp by looking at regular street lights in Italy during the early 1960's: perhaps because the shaft of the Arco lamp looks like the shaft of a traditional Italian street light during that period. The Arco lamp continues to be one of the most popular floor lamps ever made.

Lightings : Tord Boontje Garland

Lightings is something I love ever since I was in Poly. During the period, I even part-take a competition with my CCA team by designing a lamp out of recycle materials. It did won us first prize in the tertiary catagory. Anyway, the competition did made us research a bit more on how a lampshade functions. it covers the glare of the bulb & redirects lights around. In this post, i would like to share a really detailed lamp design by Tord Boontje.

If you like floral imprints you can't miss this master. He had done plenty of projects with lightings, furnitures, tablewares & recently a HP laptop.

This light particularly in my interest is the Garland for Artecnica. Its comes flat in a metal sheet, but when pull out is a continues vine with branch out blooms of leaf & flowers. This long vine is then twirl around a bulb to create a shade.

It also project nice floral shadows if you place them near a wall.

The best place to get this is from ebay. Sometimes people do sell this at quite a good price. Its retailed around USD$86 for shade only & you can fetch one @ USD$30 if you are lucky.

All you need then is just a Cord from IKEA & you are good to go!

Lightings : Cheap lamps from IKEA

We were casually browsing @ IKEA after the Chicken wing dinner & we found this. I think its quite a good deal with bulbs all in less than $50 per unit. This lamp uses 3 bulbs a bit more costly but can be brighter. Also, the key selling point was that our ceiling is quite high so if the bulb blew, it can be quite a hassle to change it. We can laze around until d 3rd bulb blew then we change all 3 @ 1go.
